Advances in semiconductors are feeding the AI boom

AI has grown rapidly from Deep Blue in 1997 to today’s generative AI systems like ChatGPT. This progress is mainly thanks to better semiconductor technology smaller, faster, and more efficient chips. To keep improving AI, companies now combine many chips together using 3D stacking and advanced packaging. Future GPUs may have over 1 trillion transistors, allowing even bigger and more powerful AI models.

Advances in semiconductors are feeding the AI boom

Artificial intelligence has rapidly evolved from IBM’s Deep Blue defeating Garry Kasparov in 1997 to today’s generative AI systems like ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion. These modern models can write, draw, translate, diagnose diseases, and assist in many human tasks. Their growth has been powered by three key factors: improved machine-learning algorithms, massive amounts of training data, and—most importantly—advances in semiconductor technology. Every major AI breakthrough has depended on the most advanced chip technology of its time, moving from micrometer-scale chips to today’s 4-nanometer processors. As AI models grow larger, they demand enormous computing power and memory, pushing chip designers to innovate beyond traditional methods. Companies now use advanced packaging like TSMC’s CoWoS and SoIC, which combine multiple chips and memory stacks into a single high-performance system. GPUs such as Nvidia’s Hopper and AMD’s MI300 already contain more than 100 billion transistors. To support future AI needs, engineers expect GPUs to exceed 1 trillion transistors within the next decade, using 3D stacking, chiplets, and silicon photonics for ultra-fast communication. These semiconductor advancements will continue to drive the next generation of AI capabilities and enable even more powerful and efficient computing systems.
