The Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka is a public university in Belihuloya, Balangoda, Sri Lanka. It was founded on 20 November 1991 as the Sabaragamuwa Affiliated University College (SAUC) in affiliation with the University of Sri Jayawardenepura. The SUSL was established on 7 November 1995 by the Gazette Notification No. 896/2 and operates under the provisions of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 and the Universities (Amendment) Act No. 7 of 1985. SUSL was ceremonially declared open on 2 February 1996 by Her Excellency Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, the president of Sri Lanka. It consists of Nine faculties.

In September 2002, University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) was established by merging The Institute of Computer Technology (ICT Ordinance 1987.09.21) and The Department of Computer Science both of the University of Colombo, as the first centre of higher learning of computing in Sri Lanka. The initiative of computing was started in September 1967 by Vidya Jothi Professor VK Prof Samaranayake at the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo. School of Computing (UCSC) was established in 2002 as part of the University of Colombo.

The University of Moratuwa is an independent state university in Katubedda, Moratuwa, Sri Lanka overlooking Bolgoda Lake. It was established as the University of Moratuwa (UoM), Sri Lanka on 22 December 1978 under the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 and operates under the general direction of the University Grants Commission. Its origin can be traced to the Government Technical College (GTC) which was established in Maradana, Colombo in 1893. The institution was known as Ceylon College of Technology, Katubedda (Katubedda Tech) before gaining university status. The Ceylon Technical College, Katubedda was established in 1966 offering the Diploma in Technology, it gained University status, as the Katubedda Campus of the single University of Ceylon, on 15 February 1972.
